Corn in general should be dried to an acceptable moisture
content suitable for storage as soon as possible to reduce
degradation. In Indonesia the general accepted level is 15 %,
however for long time storage it would be better to reduce until
14% moisture.
Corn for use in animal feed production can be dried at high
temperatures, 100 to 120 C without negative consequences; this
will result in higher fuel efficiency, and higher capacity.
The mixed-flow-continuous drier is general accepted as the
most efficient way of drying grains. The efficiency can be
enhanced by several variations, like recirculation, tempering etc.
Re-circulation will use the air from the cooling section as inlet
into the burner. This is air is already heated and will therefore
increase the fuel efficiency. The danger is for fire since the
cooling air is contaminated with dust and bee-wings etc-from the
dried corn. Tempering is the holding of the warm corn and letting
the kernel evaporate the moisture from the core.
